The Pediatric Nephrology Department at Kyungpook National University Children’s Hospital began in 1976 with the appointment of Professor Emeritus Gu Ja-hoon, and has since led the treatment of pediatric kidney diseases in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions. It boasts the longest history among the divisions of the Department of Pediatrics. Currently, Professor Cho Min-hyun is in charge of specialized care and strives to provide the best medical services to all children with kidney diseases.


Specialized Areas of Care

Glomerular Kidney Diseases and Nephrotic Syndrome: Accurate diagnosis and treatment for glomerulonephritis and nephrotic syndrome, which are accompanied by hematuria and proteinuria.

Acute and Chronic Kidney Failure Management:

• Emergency hemodialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy for acute renal failure.

• Peritoneal dialysis clinic for chronic renal failure.

• Pediatric kidney transplantation: Over 60 successful transplantations have been performed since 1985.

Congenital Kidney Anomalies and Hydronephrosis: Collaboration with pediatric urology, pediatric radiology, and nuclear medicine for multidisciplinary care of congenital kidney anomalies and hydronephrosis.

Pediatric Rheumatic Diseases: Specialized treatment for rare pediatric rheumatic diseases in Korea:

• Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

• Juvenile idiopathic arthritis

• Juvenile dermatomyositis

• Behçet’s disease and other rheumatic diseases.


Multidisciplinary Care and Collaborative Treatment


The Pediatric Nephrology Department works in collaboration with various specialized teams such as pediatric urology, radiology, and transplant vascular surgery to provide comprehensive medical services, from diagnosis to treatment and full recovery. Particularly in kidney transplantation, the department maintains a success rate on par with those of advanced countries.
